There are a great number of people who are afraid of dentists. The fear of some patients is sometimes deeply rooted. If mind conditioning (reassurance by counselling) by the dentist is not effective, you can have your dental treatment under conscious sedation. While under conscious sedation you will be awake and responsive to commands of the dentist but at the same time feel relaxed. Best thing is in most instances you will have no recollection of the procedures performed on you when the sedation wears off. Hypnosis works for some patients but requires a dentist trained in hypnotic suggestions. General anaesthesia may also be considered as a possible option.

I'm not anymore!
My best suggestion is to find a dentist who specializes in phobic patients. I found one, who was willing, licensed and affiliated with the local hospital to do all of the treatments under anesthesia. Through his gentle, caring treatment, I have managed to get past the phobia, and now know that dental work CAN be done with zero pain.

I am not dental phobic but it can help to go to a specially trained doctor who provides sedation dentistry. The dentist gives you medication that helps you be very calm during your visit and this has helped a lot of patients get the necessary care they need.

Hi, I used to be phobic about dentists but I found a wonderful web site called "Beyond Fear" - http://www.beyondfear.org/. It really helped me overcome my phobia and there is a brilliant discussion board where people in your situation can post messages asking for/giving support to enable you to get the treatment you need. The guy who runs the site is so understanding and will give you one to one coaching if you need. Even if you just go take a look at the site you will be amazed at how many others are "in the fear" just like you, and also, how many have managed to escape :o) Good luck!

I myself have a serious problem with the dentist. When i was 8 i had a filling which went really bad, so they decided to take the tooth out. They gave me some gas and i went to sleep, next thing I'm waking up as they are about to rip out my tooth. They hadn't even injected my tooth with anything to numb it, so i felt EVERYTHING. I was screaming and crying and guess what they said to an 8 year old child 'don't be such a baby'. Every time i think of it, it makes me shake and makes me feel sick. I haven't been to the dentist since i was old enough to go on me own. Luckily i have done well with my teeth and are still in great condition, but that isn't always going to be the case. But i cant go through with it!!!!
And that's the gods honest truth.

I know they say gas helps, but I'm the same way. I'm petrified of dentists and haven't been to one in over 5 years. Now it's been so long, I'm scared to go back. Who knows what he'll find. Call that 1-800-Dentist number and ask them.

Yes, nitrous oxide also known as twilight sleep, works wonders on phobias. Most Dentist know people are afraid to come to them, so lately that option has been more available to patients.

I can't stand the dentist. However, they now have sleep dentistry. When you get there they will give you a little pill, you'll go to sleep, they'll do the dental work and you'll wake up. It's easy and most insurances will cover it!
