Actually, the Christian God asks us to love thy neighbor (no matter who they are), and to visit those who are ill or in prison, and to aid those who are homeless.
These are all admirable qualities, but any reasonable person helping someone who could be a threat to us, whether it be from potential violence, or from a disease they might have, or other considerations would be foolish not to take precautions to ensure their continued health, so they can go on to spread the good word and to do God's work for another day.
Perhaps arming a particular priest may or may not be the answer, but if it were necessary, then why not?
God helps those who help themselves......
