Since whole wheat (or wholemeal) bread has more fiber per ounce (or gram) which is not added to the calorie count, and if the same amount of the two have the same calorie count, then it stands to reason that either oil or sugar has been added to the whole wheat recipe. This is very often the case, as the typical American consumer finds whole wheat to have a rather bitter flavor, and both oils and sugars can alter or cover this bitterness.

So, you need to really read the ingredients to determine which is "better." As most folks above, I tend to agree that less processing is better, BUT, Conagra is producing a flour called "ultragrain" (a trademark for the flour, not the actual wheat) from whole white wheat -- it is simply ground more finely than most whole wheat flours, and since it is produced from white wheat, which naturally has fewer tannins (the same stuff that gives both black tea and red wine their bite) it is less bitter than flour ground from more common red wheat. Thus, you can make your own "white" bread with "whole wheat" flour, and have the best of both worlds ;-) [side note: white wheat flours are still typically too "weak" for yeast bread, but several producers are breeding "stronger" strains of white wheat]

wheat bread and whole grain breads go through a lot less processing than those that use white flour. generally, the less processing that occurs, the better it is for you. try to eat more all natural, whole grains in everything, cereal, granola bars, crackers, bread, everything. you'll start feeling better. just a word of caution, though, the healthier something is, the more it makes you poop (bran muffins, for example). just time your snacks/meals appropriately.

But white bread has more processed flours in it and while they enrich it with vitamins, it'll covert to sugar in your body while wheat bread has a lot of fiber in it which si healthier and has no processed flours.

whole wheat i think is more of a complex carb, so it doesn't break down as quickly, so it keeps you full longer. versus like sugar, which is a simple carbohydrate and would break down quickly and not give too much longterm energy. also, wheat bread has fiber, and from what i can recall, fiber doesn't break down, so as it passes through your colon, it cleans it up :]

I found that Natures Own Whit Wheat has more fiber than any of them. Fiber is one essential part of your daily intake.

I personally like white over wheat so it solved both my problems.

Well the good thing about brown bread is the fiber. it binds to more fat in your small intestine so you don't put on too much weight

Less starches and carbs. There is whole grain white bread that is pretty good though.
