Im bringing my 1 1/2 old Yorkey with me on a 13 HR road trip, he doesnt like car rides and always whines and cries when he's in the car. Any recommendations on how to calm him down? Any good tricks to calm him?

I think he whines because he wants to be outside and not inside

Call your vet. Don't take any dosages that you'll see here for medication. I'd start working on it now. Try short rides. Don't feed the dog until after you get to your desination.

If it's just you in the car, use a crate. Actually it's just good to have one for them to travel in. Stop often, stay away from highway rest areas that have a lot of dog traffic. Usually loaded with fleas and parasites.

Your dog should be on a leash at all times. ID with both your home and destination addys PLUS your cell phone number. Bring some water from home too.

If you have time try to take him on several small trips to get him use to it.
If not you can talk to your vet there are tranquilizer type pills that will calm and relax your yourkie without totally knoocking her out.
also unless your yorkie has sugar problems I would sugest not feeding her till you get wheree your going also don't give her water but let her lick on ice this will ehlp to prevent car sickness also talk to you vet about what he thinks. they may suggest crating her in the car.
Hope you have a nice trip and good luck

Your vet can give him something to calm him. Also, put an old shirt of yours in the travel crate with him. Although you will be in the car, the immediate scent will help mask the scent of the car interior.

We have the same problem with our 1 year old APBT. He hates being in the car! lol.. We talked to our vet about it and he suggested to give him some benadryl, he said it would just relax him and make him sleepy. That has worked really well for us! But, I would suggest that you talk to your vet beforehand if you do decide to give your pup benadryl or anything else like that... Just to be safe! Good luck! : )

i have 2 dogs. the best way to keep em calm is to constantly talk to them, let them stick their heads out the window, or if you can have someone sit by them. Dogs can be a huge pain in the car but NEVER i mean NEVER give them treats or food they will vomit. don't use sedetives if you don't have to. remember the more of something you take the worse even if it helps. it creates a tolerence

If you're not into giving your dog drugs, then just take them out for a long time to wear them out.
