It's surprising how well it works on those who are already in the fold.

Still, there is an awfully low return rate on evangelism. Given how much proselytizing the Mormons and JWs do, if they were having any success at all, they'd be taking over the world by now. Perhaps it's because Christian arguments are not very convincing to most people who aren't already Christians.

Does it cause a change (not necessarily for the better)?

It does not necessarily have to a change within the supposed target. Remember many forms of derision are designed to have an effect on the public.

Does it inspire the dissatisfied public (witch hunt!)?
Does it cause fear of becoming the next target (even if the receiver themselves blew it off)?
Did it get a rise out of the target? Did they do something rude or foolish because they were upset?

Then it "worked". That makes it legitimate.

Yes. Dr. Phil uses it too. By talking down to people he has kept a job for himself, as have all the self-help guru quacks.

I personally don't think so. I don't remember scripture telling of Jesus being demeaning or condescending. He would say "don't be like ### because ###" but that was pretty much example, explanation.

It would appear that it's used quite often, but I wouldn't call it 'legitimate'.

It's definitely a technique but a major turn-off as well.

No, it doesn't work! If people want to see converts, they've got to have a humble attitude. Jesus was humble, and He didn't fake it.

I suppose so. Its used an awful lot. I just wonder how effective it really is. Just makes me want to go all Dr Phil on them. "So how is that workin' for ya?"
