I come from non-denominational/protestant background, and there is a Greek Orthodox church located near my home.

Yes, they are a Christian denomination and still cling to the apostolic faith, the holy scriptures and sacred tradition.

The Orthodox Church broke away from the Catholic Church in 1054 A.D. They are still very similar in many respects. Orthodox Christians have 7 sacraments, many common teachings with the Catholic Church and also the priesthood, monks and nuns. But the Orthodox do not recognize the headship of the Bishop of Rome. They are considered to be in schism.

Pope Benedict and Pope John Paul before him have both worked to reconcile the Orthodox with the Catholic Church.

May God bring us back in full unity!

God dose not concern Himself with man's "denominations" and sects... There is only One Church and Jesus The Christ is The Head of The Church.... only those who are of The Church will enter Heaven... I am sure there are some within the "Orthodox" church who are of The Church... just as there are those in most "Protestant" denominations who are of The Church... but, in both, there are many who are not of The Church and who will find them selves still sitting in the pew if the rapture happens next Sunday.

All who come to God as He prescribes will receive His fee gift of Salvation. Those become part of The Body of The Church of which Jesus The Christ is The Head. Those are the ones of The True Christian Faith. Only those of The Church will enter Heaven.
