I currently am working as an underwriting assistant for a small insurance agency. I want to get a job with a big company, like a zurich, cna, aig, liberty, nationwide, etc. Does anyone have any suggestions which company is the best to work for? I am looking to either get into underwriting or claims. I have sent my resumes in to some of the companies but haven't heard from a recruiter. Any advice as to how I can get my foot in the door of a major insurance company? Education wise I have my MBA and I have been working as an underwriting assistant for about a year. I am looking to relocate as well. Will it be hard to get a job offer in another state or city?

I don't know about underwriting, but to work as a claims adjuster, you have to be licensed for the state in which you would be working. If you don't know what state you would be moving to, you would be wasting your time getting licensed, but if you have your heart set on a particular area, it would help. You might also consider some medium-sized companies- the big players tend to get inundated with resumes, so it's hard to stand out, while the mid-sized companies might only get a few applications for open positions.

You need to send your resume to the different companies that you would like to work for. Also, consider working as an underwriter for an MGA. You would get lots of experience underwriting for a lot of different companies, and then you can market yourself a lot easier to the large companies such as Zurich.

Please understand, working at an agency is not underwriting like working for a company is. In fact, I have never heard of an underwriter in an agency. The agent may "pre-qualify" an account by looking at the underwriting guidelines, but it is not the same as being a company underwriter. I have actually done both. This is another good reason to consider an MGA - you can decide if that is what you really want to do. It was not my cup of tea - I gave it 3 years and got back into sales!

Good luck!

The best source for insurance company jobs is the insurance company website. The sites will tell you what positions they have open and in what locations. I would check to see if there is a position open in a location you would like to be at and then call that location and try to speak to a live body. Live interaction is better then submitting a resume via e-mail, as they cannot gauge you very well. Most major insurance companies don't really post jobs on the popular job search engines. Good luck and happy hunting.
