Common sense tells me its impossible to defeat an enemy if you don't know who they are.

So I have always had a problem with Bush and his wars because I don't believe he or his generals or his soldiers have a clue WHO the enemy is, where they are, when, where, how or even why they strike.
Is it all Muslims? All Iraqis? All Sunnis" All Shia? if its only some, which ones are they? if its Alqaeda which ones are they?
Can anybody, even an Iraqi answer this question?

Having been there three times....I am a Sergeant and have soldiers that I work with we ask this question all the time...just who the hell is the enemy and who isnt...then tie in the Rules of War to go with it and you are really confused then....
Rule of thumb....best to be judged by 12 then to be carried by 6.

The enemy is anybody that would want to run that country based purely on religion. The problem is that no matter when we pull out there will be a civil war and decades of kaos. none of this fihting will end until we go into full blown WW3 US and Israel against all the muslims. It will happen becasue the muslims no matter what faction are not to content to live and let live. The will do anything they can to battle Freedom and democracy , and Israel all for religion. Even the moderate muslims hate Israel. And just so you know I'm not jewish.

OK we liberated Iraq from an oppressive dictator you might know. Now we are helping the new Iraq government from collapsing on itself. If we pull out of Iraq (and we will pretty soon) it will collapse into civil war and the entire world will hate us more than they already do.
Bush is trying to prevent this because it will pretty much go down in history as his fault if things go the way we all know they will. Yea it totally lose lose unless by some act of god the middle east stops fighting with each other like they have since before recoded history.

The enemy is the people who are setting off bombs, murdering people in cold blood, and generally doing what they can to destabilize the Iraqi government.

This includes Shia, Sunni, Iraqis and foreigners.

This group also includes people who listen for sound bites from Democrats in DC so they can pump up their followers.

Nothing like Americans parroting your terrorist ideals and "beat America" mentality.

No, it extremely is totally complicated. certainly, i think the real enemy is the information media. the defense force is scared to do something with out somebody complaining approximately some thing, and it in turn will become a international huge information journey. subsequently why issues are so undesirable, and the insurgents are taking income of this. there is extremely no way which you will combat a politically appropriate conflict, and Iraq is the info of it.

as a marine yes you can. it's that damn guy that just shot your brother. Your brother that you have been serving with since you got there. Your brother that you have seen the pictures and read the letters his girlfriend and family has written. Seen the pictures of his family. Where he comes from. The one that you joke with when you get time to rest. Screw all of you that think negative about the war b/c it's hurting your little pockets back here in the us. Think of the 19 y/o kid that just got his life taken by a IED. Think he want ever have a chance to see a child of his grow up. Look for the enemy.

this war is More like a mission to restore balance to a country that has been terrorized for over 20 years. now that Saddam was taken out. the country does not know how to handle it, and is divided fighting for powers and killing eachother.

many say its a silly civil war let them be. because each side feels hate for the other extremely! if we backed out and said its a civil war let them fight it out on there own. then what ever side wins the civil war will claim power.because each side hates eachother so much. it would then be an ongoing cycle of terrible dictators and America cannot let that happen. it would make taking out Saddam and all our work pointless.

In my mind we are posturing there as police men, puting down structure and generally walking around with our big stick!!!! Today we are posturing again with ships pointed toward Iran, 17,000 troops, a show of force before talks begin. So there could be esculation beginning if Iran wants a showdown about the its nuke development. We won't be posturing forever, Iran will tip its hand here shortly and we'll be on them like white on rice.
