Blue is considered an undesireable color.

According to this:
http://www.k9web.com/dog-faqs/breeds/bassets.html#col
"The standard states "any recognizable hound color is acceptable", and blue is a recognized color in some other hound breeds, so it's not illegal - but it is VERY undesirable. It is a recessive trait resulting in genetically inherited disorders associated with this color, i.e. periscoping intestines, skin allergies and food allergies. Be wary of breeders selling these "blue" bassets. A reputable breeder would not involve themselves in purposely breeding inferior quality. "

If that's the litter I'm thinking of, the breeder sells her puppies at 6 weeks. This is far to young, puppies should be a minimum of 8 weeks before leaving the litter, 10 weeks is better.

Not necessarily but most blue versions of dogs who are not normally blue (like bassets) are much more prone to health problems. The "blue" color is actually a genetic defect and breeding to it makes it worse in succesive generations. This is often is associated with other defects, and coat problems. Typically any problems a breed are prone to to begin with are much more likely to occur in blues as well as more atypical problems. This doesn't mean that your dog will necessarily have any problems, but there is a great higher likelihood that it will if it is blue. If it typical coloration the dog is more likely to be healthy but you should not breed it because it still carried the defective gene. I also am just speaking to dogs generally. You should check and see if the AKC accepts blue as color that meats the standard. Typically AKC disallows colors that indicate a genetic problem in a dog breed. For example fawn dobermans and blue daschunds are diqualified as not conforming to breed standard due to health problems that appear in these colorations.

I'm not sure about bassets but a sheltie is known to sometimes have a drier skin. I use to own 4 of them and never had any problems.
My suggestion is first contact teh vet you will be using and ask Him/her what they know.
I would also ask the breeder for references.
It's hard to say without knowing the background. I do believe akc does not recognise that color and therefore cannot be registered.
Do not be foolish and pay for an akc reg. pup wth unrecognised colors.
My sister has a beautiful fawnaquin greatdane. It was originallly bought as an akc regesterable pup once my sister found out it couldn't be reg. she got in touch with the breeedr who in turn gave her $100 back.

I would say Black and Tan Coonhound or Beagle mix. Beagles have short legs as well, not just Basset Hounds. Or it could be a Dachshund? Who knows...

Never heard that. But, why don't you get a dog from the shelter? I'm sure they have a Basset Hound they are getting ready to kill.

Only if the father was blue too. You should never breed 2 blue dogs of any breed.

I have a blue Chihuahua and he's perfectly fine.

I really don't think you have anything to worry about--be sure to have your puppy checked by the Vet.
