Buey = wey = bull

It is some wierd reasoning. Buey means bull, but in Mexico is used to call people stuped. Then, they made it short into wey, which still means stuped, or man, or dude. Now, in a daily context just means dude, it is used in a friendly way.

I thought I was the only one with that definition of the word “buey”

In the 70 and 80s it was used as a form of insult 90s to call someone stupid, dumb, etc.
Now it just means friend unless you are angry when you say it then it goes back to be an insult
