We just bought 2 baby guppies. My mom wants to put them in a large vase with some sort of plant living on the top. Will this hurt the guppies? if not, what kind of plant should be used?

no..they need the pump to refresh their environment.
the only ones I know that live like you would like are
Bettas...and they do quite well like this..I have one in a HUGE vase on my kitchen table..Betta's have a gland that functions like a lung and they are able to breathe air above water as well as under...which is why they don't require a pump to circulate the oxygen in their tanks..

Are they the same sex? Guppies breed faster than rabbits do! I had two guppies and in 2 months, I had over 300....

Anyhow, the guppy prefers a hard water aquarium and can withstand levels of salinity up to 150% that of normal sea water. Which has led to them being occasionally included in marine tropical community tanks, as well as in freshwater tropical tanks. Adding a plant shouldn't hurt them...

I don't think so. I think I've seen it before and nothing really happened to the guppies. I'm not an expert, but besides, don't fish usually live in the ocean with a bunch of plants growing there? I think the guppies will be fine.
