I also think it would be a good idea to paint them. Anyone who agrees, lets meet up sometime at night with tins of paint and go wild!

And for Clive and anyone else who wants to ask, the sound does not bother me in the slightest. I'd rather here a slight humming than the sound of peoples screams as they died due to the affects of Global warming like hurricanes. Don't you agree?

I like them. Holland has thousands of them, and it's a beautiful place.

Much of the gneral debate is NIMBY. I don't live near a wind farm, so don't actually know what it is like to live with them on dorstep.

In the right place, especially from a distance (where they look like mobiles) they can look nice.

If still green, it would probably be best to place them out at sea, which would bypass most of the argument about looks/sound.

Mayby they could be combined with areas protected from fishing (many fish seem the thive in the areas around oil rigs, as trawlers not allowed within 1mile of rig)

If noise has high pitched component it WOULD drive me nuts (see APD)

Cities are a blot on the landscape. Wind farms are very utilitarian. I don't think most people that really enjoy nature found waterwheel powered mills to be so nice, but they sure look neat now. Given what they do, which is provide power from the already present energy sources on the planet, I think they are the most beautiful thing I've ever seen.

Yes, I think they are lovely. I wish they would paint some of them like they did the old Boston Gas Tank. Then they would look even more like the colorful pinwheels we had as children.

When I hear people complain about windmills, I want to ask them to live near an old electric plant for a month. Or, perhaps, a nuclear facility.

What are these people thinking?

I have to agree I love how wind farms look. They are pretty impressive feats of engineering and make a bland landscape come alive.

I did hear a survey a few years ago concluded that tourists appreciate them more than hate them as it shows that the community is environmentally. I can't find the source though.

I agree with you Meg.. there is an area in Wyo where they are lined up like slowly revolving giants, and every time i go through there, i realize how radically different they are to a city sky-line..!!... If a visually unnatural pollutant ever offends me it is usually the asphalt and concrete and steel of a civilization pucking it's smut into the sky.
There is a nobility to those ponderously swirling giants, a subtle indication of humanity interacting with environments, rather than altering them... an antelope standing under the spinning props of one of those immense generators gave me a barking snort of contempt, and seemed unaware ot the giant standing over him...

Do you mean create paintings of them or paint on them so they are more colorful? Either could be interesting though... paintings of them could be like modern windmill paintings. Painting on them could work well if they happen to be situated in areas where children are more likely to see them. I think they look very nice, clean, streamlined. Perhaps the objection is they do not look romantic enough. Still, the really great thing is that they provide a clean source of power, not what they look like... which only makes them look better to me!

I agree! They look great.
And don't make much noise. Anyone actually stood in a wind farm? I measured the noise of a wind farm compared to a road. It was a pointless test, because even stood right underneith a wind turbine there was minimal noise.

I agree with you. They are a fabulous feat of engineering and just go to show what great stuff we can come up with when we put our minds to it.

Lots of people just don't like change, but I'm pretty sure, that if given a choice between having a nuclear power station or a windfarm close to their home, most people would choose a windfarm!

Youre not the only person who likes them, but personally I think you are nuts, you obvioulsy don't live near any............in strong winds they drive you nuts, only the other day on Tv some families who live near a field full have to move out of their homes because of the loud noises they make in strong winds, they move to a HOTEL further away on bad night so they get some sleep, but who is paying for their lodgings????
They might be a good idea until you live near them!!!!

Definitely not! I think they look beautiful, too. I was gutted when they refused permission for the one by the M6 in Lancashire - how can they possibly claim it would be an eyesore, when there is a dirty great motorway running thro' the middle of the countryside?????? Motorways need points of interest along them - they're far too boring
