Tomorrow I get to sing the National Anthem at a graduation ceremony. I'm totally excited, but I need some help with singing with the microphone. I'll be up on a podium, with the mike in front of me (yes, I'll be able to move it). I've never sung this way before, so it's kind of new to me. Today during rehearsal, it was difficult to hear me singing, because I didn't know how close or far to place the microphone. Will someone please help me? Thanks, a lot!

If you stand right up against the podium you will probably be close enough to the mic, but if it isn't ringing thru the gym or where ever, lean in a little more. Just use your ears and GOOD LUCK

A lot depends on the mike and the amplifier

A good rule of thumb is to hold it about 6 inches away from your mouth. Most people singer louder as they sing higher - so for the top notes hold it slightly further away, bringing it back in to the 6" as you go back down.

If you are not used to singing on a stage, it's good to hold the mike in your hand rather than on the stand. It doesn't matter too much what you do with the other hand, so long as you don't keep it dead still or hanging down by your side.

If you really don't know what to do with it, pretend you are drying your fingernails as you sing. This is an old trick used by many performers without too much training.

How do I know?
Believe me - I know . . .

Have a great time - it's something you will never forget.

omgsh This is hilarious because I did this last night! Singing into the mike on the podium was awkward. But if you are singing it Acapella step back a step (dont be right on top of it like a hand-held) and dont be afraid to belt it!

Good luck and God bless!

tell them to turn the mids all the way down so you have a crisp clear sound if the guys know anything about sound they will know what you are talking about. also, you probably don't have a monitor in front pointing back at you which is the big reason you probably can't hear yourself. if at all possible i would try to get one.

if nothing else try to stay about a half inch to an inch away and belt it. if you can have someone in the back telling you to back away if the sound starts to distort.

make sure to keep your mouth probably about 1/2 an inch to an inch away and make sure you still project, even though you have a microphone. you didn't really hear yourself either because you're nervous or whoever was working the sound didn't turn it up enough. don't worry they'll hear you. :)

You should ask the band director or audio/visual aide for his/her help in determining how many inches is the right distance for your style of singing voice.
