Can't beat the previous answer except to add that the Deltic Co-Co of 1955 was the most powerful Diesel-electric in the world at the time.
The Beyer-Garratts were the best articulated steam locos in the world, no railway that had Mallets and took on a Garrett ever went back to Mallets. Also the first to crack 100mph with steam, "Flying Scotsman" was it not?
Another was that the non-streamlined steam locos of Britain had the least ancillary bits and pieces bolted to the running boards and boiler sides. They were a lot more elegant. Compare French, German or any US steam loco with a British one of the same era and you will see what I mean.
