Because it's easier to loose when you just carry it. Hah ha, I kill me.

Seriously. A rosary is a tool much like the Prayer beads Buddhists carry. It's like a Abacus, you touch a bead each time you say a prayer, this way you don't loose count.

Only the most devout carry they all the time. most people just take them to church. Also, Goth's wear then and in the 80's Madonna and Cyndi Lauper fans wore them, because they are very pretty necklaces.

Some do this as a form of protection against Satan and others to remind them to pray thier Rosary while others feel a special closeness to the Blessed Mother while wearing it.

I don't believe the rosary is supposed to be worn as jewelry.
