I have spent a month in Arizona, but this is not just about getting a green card but I don't think you can live in the US without working, it does not compare to the UK

have been thro what you are going thro now and the time scale can vary - took me 9months from posting away the original forms till the visa came thro and even at that you are still not in possession of a green card as the system goes on and on--have our joint appt in Portland OR in June of this year(married and living here since x'mas 2006) which will make it 15 months from start to almost finish lol. There is a myraid of forms to be filled in and at least one visit to the US embassy and another to London for a medical(all of which come at a price). The whole process is quite intricate and full of pitfalls so e-mail me if you wish any further details. And best of luck.

If you are married and your partner has a visa through his job you will get a visa as well, but it won't allow you to work.
You don't need a greencard in order to stay for a couple of years, you can get a work visa, but that requires that you have a job offer with an employer who doesn't mind to go through all this extra trouble for employing you. That means you either work for a large multinational company or a university. I think it must be really hard to get a green card without a job. At least at universities you first get a work visa, which then allows you to apply for a green card. The process is lengthy and expensive (people are recommended to take the help of an immigration attorney, and it is supposed to come out to about $5000). If you are not married you and your partner have to apply for a greencard separately, if you are married it's one application. (sorry, but the US goverment apparently tries to encourage its version of morality there). Before you make the decision you should read through the website down there so you know what your options are. (If you have a million $ to spare you can get a greencard as investor...)
Arizona is a beautiful place to live though, at least if you like it hot and dry.

It's not easy to get a green card even for UK citizens. Contact the US embassy in London and set up an appointment to get the details.

You can always just visit for a short period to see if you like it, or get a tourist visa for an extended stay. Whatever you do, do not over stay, that will ruin you chances of getting a green card.

good luck
