These is no truley effective birthcontrol method with out high risks other than keeping the male and female seperated at time of heat cycle. using a female diaper will only help keep everything from getting messy but it will not stop a male from breeding with the female. he will just pull or rip it off or work around it. males are pretty clever when it comes to wanting a little acting with the little lady. at heat cycle can last anywhere from 2-4wks.

here is a honest, information,,
No there is no effective birth control for dogs..
the only way your friend can deal with the situation.. is keep the two dogs seperated for at least one month when she is in season.. This means no contact, seperate rooms, seperate potty breaks,, and behind several secure barriers.. or board one for duration..
Now the male will do just about anything to get to her,, and generally boys, bark, whine, carry on go off their food, get moody when they are around females in heat..
Females also are moody, and will try to excape.. esp when in standing heat..
There is no safe method of preventing puppies once a breeding has taken place, planned or accidental.. other than confirming the pregnancy and aborting it, or having the dog spayed early in pregnancy..
the old mismate shot.. is no longer in use because 1 can cause a fatal infection in the *****.. and 2 often messes them up enough they no longer can have puppies..

there is a drug ovaban, daily medication..that can supress heat cycles,, but cannot be used on a young female,, not till she is mature..and that is at least 2 years old..

It can work,, but does have side effects.. makes females more aggressive sometimes, and can again do other things that can prevent future breeding and is not recommend in valuable breeding dogs..
Hope this helps..
The short is,, Honestly.. if you want to breed,, and own both dogs,, then you have to make signifigant changes to prevent unwanted breeding.. and it is a real big pain in the butt,, but that is what has to be done..
He might want the male altered,, honesly most good breeders do not use the male they happen to own,, instead of keeping the male intact,, unless he is a really exceptional dog,, he WILL not be in demand.. chances are that he may not be a match for her, when she is mature.. and not worth keeping a intact male around..

No, the only reliable birth control is to get the dog spayed or neutered. And you should only breed an animal if you are sure she is a purebred, you have the papers proving that she is, and you have had her checked out by a vet and she has had all the necessary tests. The same goes for the male dog.

Take the male to another location and tightly confine the female whenever she's in heat.

but i urge your friend not to breed at all. What happens if he can't get rid of the puppies? Or will those puppies go to a fighting pit to be used as bait? Either way it's a horrible gruesome death.

tell your friend to get a job and get his dogs spayed and neutered. There are countless unwanted pitbulls out there for adoption.

No. The birth control medications for dogs are not really safe and can have serious, even deadly side-effects. The only reliable method (other than spaying) is keeping them totally separate.

A diaper is NOT going to stop a determined male.

To the best of my knowlage the only dog birth control medicine is off the market due to a combo of side effects & abuse. Seperation is the only method I know. You COULD freeze the males sperm and neuter him - using the frozen for a later litter....

Yes use a diaper when shes in season. You can get a cloth diaper from a pet store( disposable pads fit right in). Just take it off for potty breaks. work's wonders.
