I know for a fact that its not always about the ratings. Sometimes the station is searching for another type of audience, there can be several different reasons..I need to star your question, so I can ask my professor the specifics.
Ok so this is what I understood. Like I said its not always about the ratings. Before a show is renewed (in most cases) the producers have to meet with the network, to talk about plans for the next season(basically showing what direction the show is going in) If the network doesn't agree, or producers don't really want to change it, the network can decide whether to cancel it from its station,or they can decide to give it a little more time. Don't know if you know this but the show Seinfield actually had low ratings at one point(the beginnning) but the network decided to give it a full season, and the show became a big hit. Other things that can decide if a show is canceled are the actors. If certain actors decide to leave or want to move on to other things, that can cause cancellation as well. For example the Fresh Prince of Bel Air couldn't be a show without Will Smith...etc. Also producers of a show could also decide to end it, most people want to stop the show on a high note instead of being forced out. But some of the shows that were canceled can be picked up by other networks. Seventh Heaven, the Gilmore Girls, and Smallvillle, were all supposed to have their final seasons last year when they were still on the WB network. But when WB and UPN merged into the CW ..the new network decided to give all of those shows another season, which of course led to the eventual cancellations of 7th heaven and the Gilmore girls, which did have lower ratings than expected. As far as Veronica Mars goes, this show actually could come back( I believe this show is being used as a back up in case the new shows aren't successful) in mid-season. And like I said about other networks picking up the shows, this also happened when ABC canceled the sitcom The Hughleys, which was the number 1 new show, UPN actually picked this show up for a couple of seasons.
I believe I have included everything I remember him telling me about cancellations, and I hope I have been a help.
Ok I remember, someone was correct in you and all other fans, writing to the network and give them your opinion on the cancellations, the show the PJ'S was actually saved by fans, years ago. The CW is looking for a new line-up to bring in higher ratings, and if you have seen the new lineup for next season, you would be highly disappointed, the CW will be filled with really dumb reality shows, one about a farmer, they are bringing back that P- Cat Dolls show, there is another show that actually starts next week called hidden palms which is sure to fail, it doesn't look appealing at all.

What TV shows to watch (canceled shows)? I have a little free time on my hand and I'm wondering what tv shows to watch. Preferably tv shows that have been canceled so i don't have to watch it in the fall. I enjoy a variety of tv shows such as (teen) dramas, comedys, sci fis. My favourite are Grey's Anatomy, One Tree Hill and Chuck. I watch other shows like gossip girl, heroes, CSI:NY, private practice, dollhouse. I have previously watched the o.c., charmed, prison break. So do you guys have any suggestion on tv shows i should watch (that are canceled) that are really good for stuff I like. Thanks

Cancellation is some what based on the viewers. The viewers are reported by the Nielsen rating system. Each appointed family puts data into the Nielsen machine which lets the Network know who is watching what.

Ratings and Television studio execs. If they are not bringing in enough advertising dollars to support the production of the show and they aren't making a profit - Voila! Show cancelled. Its a business kid.

Well, whenever less than 30 million people veg out in front of said (generally) rubbish programme, the advertising isn't worth much. Normally when actors quit, ratings fall or money is lost.
