we're working on potty training my almost 4 year old daughter. she's doing great but there's one problem... she won't poop. it's not that she won't go in the potty.. she just WON'T go. anywhere. not in her diaper or anything. she holds it until she HAS to go (at least a week) and then it hurts.. which is why she holds it again the next time she has to go.. is there anything i can do short of giving her a laxative every day? i know that can't possibly be good for her to do that.

You may want to try a non-medicated glycerin suppository. Since she is 4, you may or may not be able to insert it, but it's worth a try. As for the laxatives, you really need to be careful... excessive use of laxatives may be related to problems later in life.
You can also try giving her more 'bowel producing' foods and drinks such as juice, (just be careful about the sugar consumption) prunes, fresh fruit, (apples, plums, and pears work best) and plenty of water.

Remember that a trusted pediatrician is always your most reliable source of information for medical questions relating to your little one.

My sister in law had the same problem. What she did was made almost a party about going in the potty. Waves bye-bye and stickers, and a treat for her son. You might also try a natural laxative. My grandma would say cod liver oil, but I would ask your dr. about flex seed instead it has benifits and doesn't sound nearly as gross. If you can make 'it' happen and not hurt, then throw a bathroom bash, that might be incentive enough. Also, I would increase her fiber, add a flax oil supplement, and then look out!

Have you tried ostipators, foods that work the opposite of constipators. Some are apple, pear, fruit juice...you get the picture. If you have tried these you should ask your doctor about giving her aloe once a day. Sometimes that is all you can do, but it is much more gentle than chemical laxatives. Don't forget to have her drink plenty of water. Also, be sure you know what the constipators are, did you know bananas are on that list?

This happened to my daughter from the age of about 2.5 until about 3.5 (when she finally decided she was potty trained-it was her decision and she hasn't had a single accident since).

The one thing I want to tell you is that as bad as this is, it WILL pass...and probably soon! Give her Senokot to help her poop-it's all naturala nd works really well.

To get her to poop on the potty, do NOT be above bribing. But for a poop, it's got to be better than, like, a sticker. A pair of Buzz Lightyear slippers (this was befreo she hit her princess phase) did the trick for my bean.

Good luck-it will pass it will pass it will pass!

My 11 year old had this problem when she was potty training, her doctor had me go to a specialist, who had me use Metamucil Fiber Powder 1-3 times a day until it cleaned her out and she was going daily w/o problems. Then we used it once every 2 days, then once Evey 3 days, as long as she was going at least once a day, eventually she didn't need it anymore.
Just make sure she has at least one B.M. each day

Give her prune or pear juice once a day. Prune worked best for us, but it doesn't taste as good as pear. It should soften the poop up enough so that it doesn't hurt for her to go. Then maybe she won't hold it so long the next time.

you could always give her a little prune juice everyday. thats a natural laxative. just make sure she doesn't get tramatized by the whole experience. stay home when you do it, and be sure to make a huge deal out of her going on the potty.

it is NOT ok that she is doing that, talk to your doctor about a solution, maybe there is something wrong in that department. Other than that talk to her. tell her that it's ok to go poop when she feels she has to go. tell her it's not good for her body to keep it in. put her on the toilet periodically and make a game out of it. when i was potty training my kids, i would put them on the potty and tell them to tell their poopy or peepee to come out. they thought it was the funniest thing and stopped thinking about being on the toilet and the pee and poop just flowed out. everything is easier when it's fun!

my neice used to do this, and it has been a struggle for her for the past 30 yrs now..she had a telescoping bowel,.used to plug up toliets..
a diet high in roughage, prune juice warmed with a bit of butter works well... you dont want her hooked on laxatives or enemas, but she needs to get in the habit of going.
find what foods seem to make her go...raisons, etc..and feed her that

It sounds cruel but you could bribe her into pooping. If she poops give her two pieces of lets say chocolate or some treat that she likes and only give it to her when she poops and at no other time!
