You noow need a passport to return to the US. I don't beleive its necessary to leave but if you want to come back, get one. In order to enter Canada you need:
1. proof of your U.S. citizenship such as your U.S. passport (For information on obtaining a U.S. passport, check with one of the regional passport agencies located throughout the U.S.) or certified copy of your birth certificate issued by the city, county or state in the U.S. where you were born. If you are a naturalized U.S. citizen and do not have a passport, you should travel with your naturalization certificate. A driver’s license, voter’s registration card or Social Security card is NOT valid proof of citizenship.
2. photo identification, such as a current, valid driver’s license.

You will need a passport in the future, but you can get away without one for about a year more. I'd take a passport if you have one. Also state ID is fine for most things, but I would carry at least your social security card as a secondary ID.

No, but you'll require one to get back in the US if you're flying.
Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration Card, Form I-551, if applicable.
As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.

If you have a passport, take it. If not get one. They are getting very strict on crossing the border. You may need one eventually anyway. Always good to have a passport.

No passport is necessary, but you have to bring your ID (Drivers License) and your birth certificate. BTW, I live in Seattle and have been to Canada recently. I don't know why some fool gave me a thumbs down.

If you are driving, you shouldn't need one, but it's always good to have it on hand as well as your ID.
If your flying, you must have passport.
