Why do we work so hard to guard our kids?

The entire point of being a kid is to learn to be an adult.
That's why we show them how to tie their shoes and cook macaroni form the box. Why do so many people vacuum pack their kids from everything. I understand that kids don't need to know certain things before they mature but if you keep them blind from the world you are setting them up for failure.

Parenting is not an easy thing. You are learning too. Some parents get it better then others.

Some people shelter their children too much, others not enough. It's always been like that and always will be because there's no instruction manual on how to raise a child. Plus, all children are different, some need more sheltering.

Its in the way you present the information. For example Seseame Street aired its episode on hurricanes during the time Katrina hit. This would be more appropriate for a toddler than having them watch cnn reports of it.

Now macaroni and cheese is too salty and processed plus many just now use the easy mac versions.

It's funny, a lot of people here are judging the question and are probably the very parents you are talking about. Many of the worst offenders home school and believe that shots which save our children are a government conspiracy.

On one hand I'm glad to see it, most of their kids will be the ones that serve our food and pick up our trash. Of course you won't hear that from them, they will claim that their kids have near perfect SAT scores and got into Harvard. Most of them are lying failures and it bugs them.

I will protect my child from the bad in the world, but never shield him from the truth of the world.

Yes, but I want them to live to become adults. And when they get to be adults, I want them to be well adjusted. The simple fact of the matter is that current culture is forcing children to grow up too fast. Try to find clothing that isn't oversexualized for your daughter once she's out of toddler clothes. It's virtually impossible. Current music and music videos are completely unacceptable. Even some so-called kids movies have inappropriate content, for example, the Mike Myers version of the Cat in the Hat.

While I agree that I don't want my children to be completely blindsided by the world when they finally get out in it, I also don't want them to be forced to grow up before they are ready.

There is a fine line here. You need to allow them to learn or its going to make life harder, so I agree with that. But now a days there is sooo much badness that wasnt there before and you need to shelter them to keep them safe from the world. This is a difficult situation that I am now being faced with.

I understand what you are saying and that is part of the reason I am divorcing my wife. Sometimes we have to throw our kids into situations to make them decide on what to do.

Example: I started my son in football at 5 years old, My wife did not want him to play because he had to play with kids 7 and 8 years old. He played and was really good.

Some times you have to throw your kids to the wolves to let them succeed of fail on their own. Just be supportive of them and help them grow.

We protect them because we love them. They will have to grow up one day... we all do , but you try to protect them as much as you can while they are impressionable and gullible. It is what being a parent is all about.I always told my kids to enjoy being a kid as long as you can..because you'll be an adult a lot longer.
