John 11:49-50 (NIV) reads:

Then one of them, named Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, spoke up, "You know nothing at all! You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish."

Caiaphas, the counsellor, was the high priest that year. Caiaphas did not want Jesus just silenced. He wanted Him dead. It is common for those in authority to impose their corrupt ideas on others. And just because they should be the wisest, to expect that they should be the deciders over the people. Caiaphas, only concerned with civil interest, was adamant.. " Jesus goes, or we lose all control" was his thinking and sadly that thinking is still alive today.

Midge is right about Caiaphas' intention when he spoke.

It is God who allowed Caiaphas, His high priest at the time, to unconsciously speak a true prediction of how Jesus would save the world by dying in the place of all.

He was afraid that the Romans would start taking notice of the stuff going on and decide to come down on the Jewish people again for instigating rioting (this is just what he used to incite the people as Jesus didn't instigate rioting, the unrest had nothing to do with Jesus other than they thought he would turn out to be a great King and lead them out of underneath Roman rule but, when they saw Jesus all battered and humiliated they were sure then that he was a fraud) They just couldn't fathom the extent of Jesus' saving action as even though he would have saved them from Roman rule they would have all still died and they had no idea he wanted to save them from death itself.

He speaks of Jesus, the one man to die for the people rather than the nations being obliterated.
