Hey,

I was just wondering; why does America think it has rights to the Arctic Northwest passage?

Why do they claim the waters that are clearly Canadian territory to be "international", and what do you think about Stephen Harper's move to blockade the passage from all American shipping with Canadian warships?

After centuries of searching, the NW passage was finally found a few decades ago; right in Canadian waters! So why do the Americans try and go through there?

As global warming progresses, a north west passage across the gap between the north coast of Canada and the Arctic ice pack may get wider and be open longer each year. This will make that route more viable. If it eventually becomes a real international trade route, there will be serious international pressure for it to be treated in the same way as other trade essential passages through national waters have been since the passages into and out of the Baltic Sea, which were, at the time, wholly surrounded by Danish territory, were declared free to commerce after the trading nations of the world paid a lump sum to the Danish monarchy in lieu of the toll revenue Denmark lost on passages into and out of the Baltic.

The United States contends that the Northwest Passage, though owned by Canada, is an international strait with free passage for all, like other straits around the world. U.S. officials say they are following a long-standing position in favor of keeping straits free to all navigation and want unimpeded movement of U.S. ships.

Because it has been international waters for hundreds of years.

Every time Canada starts making noises about the the US, Great Britain and Russia go and sail a military task force through the waters to demonstrate that these are international waters.

America wants to go through there because they can, and Canada wasn't going to do anything about it.

If the new PM is going to put warships there to blockade it, I say good for him. I doubt Americans would like it if Canada sent ground troops from Montreal to Halifax right through Maine.

I congratulate James W on one of the stupidest things I've ever read on Y!A.

No one in the USA really cares. Would you rather Russia lay claim? Canada needs to grow up on this one? The Russians are laying claim to tech tonic plates surrounding your country and you aggravate the one country that would willingly defend your claim. Or maybe you've beefed up your own military and you don't need us anymore - doubt it. Brilliant work Canada.
