If I was you I would consider an 03 or 04 Cobra Mustang. They come stock with a V8 with supercharger for 390hp and 390ft/lbs torque. You should be able to find one for the mid to low 20s depending on mileage. Several easy upgrades are available readily online. A cold air intake, exhaust upgrade, smaller belt and pulley, and fuel chip will give you close to 500hp for just under 2 grand. General consensus is that it will run 12.6 in the quarter bone stock and was the fastest production Mustang until the new Shelby came out. Plus they come in convertible and all come with a 6-speed manual and IRS.

IMO, a new Pontiac GTO (aka Holden Manaro) or a new Mustang GT would be your best bet. The STi is a pretty capable car, although 9 out of 10 have been treated like a dime store hooker, then sold to a used car lot. If I were you, I'd go with the GTO. A lot of people give it s*** because it isn't technically an "American Muscle Car" but rather an Australian car with a different front end, but it's still a great car.

The ' public ' rave about BMW. Such successful advertising, (which has brought the brand down market). A very well respected magazine concluded that the Mercedes C series AMG left the BMW M class 'for dead'. And they are not prone to exagerration. There is more to a really good car than street cred with people who are not auto engineers................

Try to find a 2004 Cadillac CTS-V. 400hp and will blow the doors off most anything. You will have to get one with a few miles on them because they are bringing around $30k+ for one with decent miles. When they came out in 04 they competed in SCCA racing and won all the races against Audi, Porshce, Vettes..name it. Unbelievable!

The Saturn Sky Roadster looks pretty good and is priced at around $25k. It's sporty, two seater, convertable, and besides, you can get it new without buying someone elses headache.

You can occasionally find a Noble M12 in that range, but they're fairly rare.

Still, if you can find one, very few cars are faster.
