Purchased a pendant for my necklace from the vatican. It's of the madonna holding a baby with a bird flying over each shoulder. Does anyone know what pendant this is? Is it protection for mothers & baby? I've tried searching internet but can't find anything that looks like it. Would appreciate reference to it. Thanks!

It might stem from Andrea della Robbia's "Madonna in Adoration." In the original it had two cherubim but these were sometimes replaced with doves. See the seventh chapter of the book, below.

If they are different types of birds it may be a dove, symbol of the holy spirit, and a goldfinch, symbol of the passion.

In addition to the answer above, Andrea della Robbia had a second sculpture called "Madonna and Child with Cherubim" which might be the model for your pendant.
