Yes, and it will be a critical part of our national defense in the near future. Hell, it already is if you consider how important all the GPS systems are.

The military has been studying this since probably WW2. Space and the deep ocean are the only two areas that cannot be controlled. Former President Reagan was a huge fan of spaced based air defense. Space would be the perfect platform for early detection systems, lasers, missile deployment, observation of enemy territory with whole spectrum telescopes and equipment at our disposal. The one true problem, is COST. It would require billions of dollars in annual upkeep, maintaining, and it is a logistical nightmare as far as re-supply.

Count on it. There's too much possibility of a threat coming in from space to ignore it. I don't mean aliens, but rather ICBMs or satellite-based weapons.
