Any type of ibuprofen might help, like motrin, aleve or advil. Aside from drugs, you can try applying heat periodically for 20-30 minutes at a time. You don't want to apply ice because ice works to constrict blood flow to the iced area. You'll need blood flow to help heal and get back to the way it was before.

You should check this Sciatica Natural Treatment
http://cure-sciatica.info

Normally, I would not answer a question like this as my expertise is generally in medication but I had severe sciatica while I was pregnant with my 3rd child (after having had twins) and I had sciatica so bad that I was finding it difficult to walk. I tried massage therapy and physical therapy and could not take medication
I went to the chiropractor and the pain was instantly relieved. My hips and lower back were out of alignment because I had carried twins the year before. On occasion a Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) can also work but they usually only work on one joint at a time - the chiropractor will do your whole back which works faster. Anyone who does not believe in chiropractors will tell you they are quacks - don't listen.
I don't necessarily believe that chiropractors can cure things like diabetes but they can definitely relieve some types of back pain especially if a pinched nerve is involved which is usually the cause of sciatica. Try a reputable chiropractor ASAP!

Sciatica is very painful. I don't think you can relieve that sort of pain without painkillers; I've been there. A warm bath helps for a little while, so do physiotherapy exercises for some people, but they can only take the edge off the pain. Better to take the pills and be able to live a little. Well done you for caring - your mum must be proud of you. Good luck to you both.

Something about Aleve here the company won't admit to just yet, There is a lawsuit against them , my friend is one of them, she was taking Aleve three times a day for arthritis pain and had Kidney failure, both kidneys shut down. One would not start up. She had to go on dialysis for about eight months. She did pull through, the diagnosis was kidney failure through poisoning from Aleve. There is a lawsuit pending. Take care with over the counter drugs and go with what the doctor tells you, have check ups regularly.

Take Aleve-2 caps (for inflammation) and Extra-Strength Tylenol-2 caps (for pain) -- according to directions.

Lay on an ice pack for 20 minutes, then off for 20 minutes, repeat... OR lay on an ice pack for 20 minutes, then a moist heating pad for 20 minutes, repeat...

If the sciatic pain is in your hips and legs, as you say, apply the ice pack and heating pad on your lower back/lower spine area.

I hope this helps. I know what you're going through.

Try an anti inflammatory. Something like Aleve. My sister has an irritated sciatic nerve and this helps.

I have the same problem from time to time. Try going to the chiropractor, it relieves the pain and helps prevent it from happening.
