Why would it be "wrong"?
Being generous is never wrong. Having good intentions is never wrong.
Yes, THEY can be wrong if they then take your gift and go use it to buy drugs or alcohol or something, but that is about THEM, not you.
Either way, whatever your gift is used for, it has at least brought some comfort to them that day.

Yes, I do judge people on their cleanliness and appearance when deciding whether or not, in my opinion, they are "really homeless". There is a man who stands on the corner of an intersection every day near here who has a girl who obviously has some form of lupus or some other bone disease, and they both are clean and well-dressed, and across the street this obviously homeless guy stands there, pacing up and down the street, because everyone gives money to the guy with the crippled girl and ignores him.
I think it's sick that he uses that girl to get money.

i don't think it's wrong to give them $$$. Cuz you never know who your giving it too. You may be giving someone $$ to buy food for there family or give there family some needed medical care. On the flip side you might be giving $$ to someone who will by liquor with it. But you never know. You have too look at it from the perspective that what if you were in that situation, would you want people to give you some $$. Also when it comes down to the pearly gates and god asks what did you do? Did you help people in need or did you judge them by the way they looked? You can say I helped them and then the man behind you judged them by the way they looked. What than?

I used to give to the intersection beggars, but I don't anymore. There was this one old lady where I used to live who begged for money. I felt sorry for her because she really looked like she was homeless, or at least hungry, so I gave her money. Well, then I read a police report in the local paper that this woman had been picked up for scamming people like that. She wasn't in need at all, just liked taking people's money. So now I really don't trust them. I know I shouldn't judge all of them based on that one incident, but now I just give to the shelters or food banks.

I'd rather give my money or donations to a charitable organization that works to help them get back on their feet, as opposed to giving out money on the street corner to someone when you don't know what they're using it for - are they buying food with it? Or booze and drugs? Is it really helping them? Or is it just enabling them to remain where they are?
If I have $10 and I give it to one person, they can maybe buy a couple of meals. If I give $10 to an organization that can use their size and presence to get bulk discounts, maybe that $10 can buy four meals.
I realize that organizations have administrative fees and that 100% of my donation doesn't go to the people they're helping, but IMHO it's still a better return than just giving it to the guy on the corner.

That is a good question. I think if you give someone that looks like they are in need you can never be wrong for that. If the person is scamming you than they are in the wrong and they will have to deal with that. If you know that a person is just a lazy, drunk, drug addict that just doesn't want to work and you choose not to give them money, I would say you are doing a wise thing.

I personally feel that I would rather give them some food or drink if I have it.
I've seen so many beggars in our local convenience stores buying beer and cigarettes that I don't give out money. I know there are those out there that will use it responsibly and go buy something to eat, but I don't trust them.

I don't think it's wrong to give them money. If you are suspicious of them, but still feel inclined to help, how about donate money to a local shelter/soup kitchen and carry something in your car (boxes of crackers, bottles of water, whatever) that you could give the people you see on the corner. That's what I do. That way i know they're getting fed but not spending my money on drugs or booze.

We have a guy like this in our town, he is still young, healthy, and able bodied, he even has a dog that lives with him on the streets. People give him money all the time. What most people don't know is that he uses most of that money to buy beer........

I used to feel bad for homeless people, and give them money. But a couple times I offered food instead of money and they said thanks... but can I have some money too? Game over! You know that some of those people actually make hundreds of dollars a day off of the kindness of others!
