As a consumer, no, not really.

People say walk or ride a bike, which is fine provided you live close enough, but most Americans live so far from shopping and work that those options just aren't feasible.

We are at the mercy of whatever they charge us.

We just have to rethink how we live and do things we have taken granted up to now. No more jumping into the car and driving 20 miles roundtrip to buy a single item that you really can do without. Yes it'll be inconvenient, but on the other hand, this is reality of the world we are in today.

Some will go blindly on and not consider it a problem and continue driving just as they have always done. That is fine, if they can afford it. But the demand for fuel is what determines price and the more that is used, well, everybody pays more.

Decrease global demand. But I don't think China and India will listen to you, so just try and decrease your personal demand.
Make sure your tires are properly inflated. Carpool. Walk or bike when you can. Combine trips and take the most efficient route.
