The pigeons were Racing Homers, and they were trained to fly to their home. They were carried away from their home base by soldiers, and when the soldiers met up with a problem, they would insert a message into a small metal capsule attached to the pigeon's leg, and it would fly back to it's home base with the message. A bell would ring when the birds entered the loft, so someone could retrieve the message. Some modern metropolises use Homers to deliver blood samples to a central lab, (where the loft is located) because it's faster than a ground courier. Homing Pigeons fly about 60 MPH.

They were homing pigeons - they would be taken to elsewhere and when they were released they would fly home with the message.
Pigeons navigate using the magnetic forces of the earth so they can return home over huge distances.

It went home - back to it's loft - like all racing pigeons.
