I hardly believe that is the way things happen. I think it is just a habit. It it was true you would see all those teenagers texting at the mall actually laughing out loud.

Its the most over used thing on this site as ive read loads of answers with lol, pmsl or lmao and there was nothing funny to read.... but sometimes it just shows that they were trying to be funny as sarcasm or even a bit of wit can be missed by so many people unless you put lol at the end.... lol lol lol lol lol...wait there... thats not funny

I think with most people, ita become an acronym that signals everythings ok, because we put in in txts even when where not laughing. And if we dont write, people ask whats up.. wierd

no way.. its usually just a filler response or to indicate you thought something was funny, not to literally be laughing out loud

Some do, some don't - same with rofl - roll on floor laughing(though rofl is funnier to observe) :)
