she has obtained my social security number from my ex wife, who got my ss# from tax forms and from the IRS, and I fear she will use it to steal my identity. What can I do to avoid this from happening?

Only way to garnish salary (if it is even legal in your state and it isn't in most) is to get a judgement thru a court and you will be advised and given a chance to defend yourself. If it is paid, she won't get a garnishment. If it is unpaid, you have the right to have the garnishment settled and stopped as soon as the amount (usually with interest and penalty) are paid.

Identity theft is a different thing, You can advise the police if something has happened; but there isn't anything you can do about something you are afraid might happen except keep an eye on your credit reports

You will have your chance to fight any garnish. Call your ex-wife and ask her if she could get her sister a job. It's sad that you aren't even married anymore but they still need to leech on you.

Remember that as long as you are paying SOMETHING, even $20 a month, she can't take action. All she can do is collect her $20 a month and stfu.

Sounds like a job for either a local FBI office, or secret service. If you have a copy of the contractual agreement and proof of the payment, contact your local field office on their main websites. Also contact your local IRS office & see what they recommend.

Identity theft is a federal crime and you know she obtained your information so she would not get far. If she does the crime she will do the time; and Bubette awaits her.
