We've had ships in the Persian Gulf for a long long time. The media just feels that now is a good time to address this as part of the Democratic campaigning process.

Okay... first go get a map. Note that the Straits of Hormuz are the ONLY way in and out of the Persian Gulf, and that is an international waterway. Next, note that those carriers are ALSO supporting the operations in Iraq, so we're not "spreading thin" our forces by waving to the Iranian "Navy".
We've had at least ONE carrier inside the Persian Gulf at ALL times since 1991. I did 4 deployments on carriers inside the Gulf after Desert Storm, and 2 deployments on frigates before/during the Liberation of Kuwait
EACH time we transit the Straits, Iran sends out patrol boats to eye-ball us... when we cruise around the Gulf, Iran sends out their P-3 Orions to eye-ball us.
We're just exercising in the area as normal... we added a MEU, but it's ALL scheduled.

We train to fight. The Gulf has always been unstable and the world demands we keep that strategic shipping lane open. Not for USA benefit either!
We have had 100 exercises there in the past 30 years, why your kicker in a bunch now? heck I was shadowing Russian bears in the straights of Hormuz back in 82.

This is the perfect time, with our troops already deployed to the region and a logistical base in three neighboring countries. If we were to go to war with Iran now, it would make Iraq safer, since the majority of weapons and terrorists are from Iranian.

The Navy is not spread to thin, neither the Air Force. Belive there going to do target practice, maybe.
Iran can be taken out without putting one soldier on the ground. Turn that desert to glass pretty cheaply.

It's just like what they did in March. Just flexing our muscle so to speak. Iran has a weakend Navy at best. We're just over there showing them what we can do so they don't get any ideas.

Military excercises should reflect plausible scenarios. War with Iran is a plausible scenario while war with Canada is not.

I, and many of the insiders I have talked to, tell me that they don't believe this is an "exercise" but instead building up for a military strike or a bulking up for extra protect over a period when increased fighting is expected.

We've been doing that every couple of years since 1980, nothing new there.
