Depends where the egg was found. If it was in a nest which is being watched by the parents, the egg will be fine. Birds have a poor sense of smell so human contact should not impact it, but don't touch the egg anymore or the parents may see your friend as a threat and abandon it. If the egg was on the ground, it is likely infertile and was pushed out of the nest by the parents, or it may have been blown out of the nest. In this case, the embryo did not survive and touching it will not matter.

In order for an egg to hatch it must be maintained at a certain temperature for a certain amount of times. This is how incubators work. IT might be possible to put the egg back in the nest withough the parent robbin knowing and it may sit on it and help it hatch. Maybe it will reject it depending on the smell or if it thinks there is something wrong with the egg. Most birds are not that picky. Also, there havebeen intanes where a particular type of bird goes into another smaller birds nest and destroy all its eggs. Then it puts in its own eg. The unsuspecting parent then does all the work for the bigger bird withough realising what is going on. It even feeds the bigger birds baby for a while. Poor little bird has to do all that extra work trying to feed a baby that is bigger than him/her.

If you touch the nest or eggs the adult will almost certainly abandon the nest. Taking them home is fine if you want to bake a cake. Unfertilized, the eggs will be as good as hen's eggs for baking.

If it truly is an abandoned nest and incubation was interrupted, the embryos will likely be dead. At any rate if you unthinkingly touched the eggs, you could try to incubate them. Unless you know what kind of eggs you stole from the wild nest you may get a nasty surprise if they do hatch. PLUS you will have six to eight weeks of feeding insects or worms to some very demanding, helpless, messy creatures.

Ask the robin inside...two taps on the shell means yes.

Touching it will have no effect on whether or not it will hatch.
