I just purchased a new Trek 1000, and I have about 70 miles on it right now. The LBS that I purchased it from did not tell me to come back for any maintenance, but someone told me that I should take it in after 50 miles to get things checked out? Should I do this?

You usually get a free check up with the new bike, known as the 30-day check. It is typical and predictable for the four steel cables to slacken and need to be re-tightened. Most bicycle dealers offer this and may have forgotten to go over this free service with you. Brringing your bicycle back to the dealer is a win-win situation. You get service, you can comment on the product, change the saddle angles, handlebar height, etc. The dealer wins by having yet another chance to sell goodies. Call them and then bring your bicycle down. Also a good time to review front wheel removal, shifting, tire pressure and confirm your 'fit' and comfort.

If it's a Trek 1000 you should take it in every mile to be inspected... But on a serious note, here's a general maintenance schedule for your bike:

You don't need an inspection every 50 miles; if you did people would be stopping in the middle of rides and training just to get checked out. You can monitor your own tire pressure, nuts, bolts, chain, cranks, etc. You should always check your tires and look your bike over before you ride but a pro doesn't have to look at it for about 500 miles at least.

Good luck!
