Christians believe that Christ, who is god Incarnate, died on the Cross for our salvation and that He rose from the dead. We also believe that we too will rise from the dead on the Last Day when Jesus returns so the cross is symbol of victory over sin and death and has become an identity sign for Christ ,Christians and Christianity. There are many styles and shapes of crosses.

In christianity the cross signifies christ's sacrifice - which they believe allows them to be saved from sin, so that they can go to heaven.
They put it on graves as a symbol to reassure themselves that their loved one is in heaven.
Nothing really wrong with it - though it doesn't make much sense.

It's so visitors to the grave can recognize the departed as a Christian.
And it's nice to see someone else in here know about the Pagan foundations of christianity, but I disagree about the "true" comment. A lot of "true" christians simply do not read up on the mythology of their faith. They are still "true".

The cross is a symbol of Christianity. This identifies the deceased as a Christian. It doesn't protect or have any magical powers.

The cross is the symbol of resurrection, since Christ died on a cross and rose from the dead.
Placing a cross on the grave reflects the belief that we will all rise again.

I am a Christian and I don't put a cross on any of my loved ones graves, none of them are there, so I can't visit them nor talk to them.

because it shows the person was a believer in the cross, why do people wear the cross-same reason-yet for some that live in sin-it is just to mock Jesus again, instead of saying that they repented from sin, let to their heart Jesus in and got born again with Jesus as their best friend. John 3 "Repent and let Jesus into your heart to be forgiven from sins, and have him to be born again, and see the kingdom of heaven."
worked for me Jesus is my savior and best friend now-and the cross signifies his sacrifice coming from heaven to be spit on and nailed to the cross innocent to be the sacrifice needed for my sins.
What fireball said sums it up=tradition and comfort
Isaiah 52:13-53:12 He will lay down his life to make atonement for our sins. He will die with the wicked (that was the worst torture in death known) and will be burried with the rich."
As history confirms Messiah Jesus died on the Cross
to those that believe for our salvation and that He rose from the dead.
Zechariah 12:10 When we shall see him whom we have pierced(=on the cross), we shall mourn for him as a mother mourneth for her only lost son."
the cross is symbol of victory over sin and death and has become an identity sign for believers in Jesus.
The cross shows The Messiah's Sacrifice for our sins so we can be saved.
It is a symbol-of the resurrection-the empty cross meaning they will resurrect too to heaven.

To stop vampires, the cross supposedly stops them from climbing out of their graves and preying on the living.
