Because it is a commandment straight from the Word of God. My dear Aunt who is a very holy, spiritual woman, a bible reader, a Godly example of a beautiful woman and mother used to (and still does) always say, "Bless God, Bless God." I used to be like, WHAT?! Bless GOD? WHY does HE need blessing? NOW I understand. God wants us to be close to Him and understand He as our Creator wants to hear from us, about us, speak to us and its just like you and your best friend. If you don't talk, what happens, you lose touch. Some have NEVER talked to Him or prayed, so they have no relationship. So when I ask you to pray for me, I am asking that you, another creation would take time from the time YOU TALK TO GOD, to talk about your friend, ME who is in NEED. If you and a friend both ask your parents or teacher or boss for something, isn't he/she more likely to say, "Hey! This needs to get done NOW. They're TRUSTING me to do it?" I say yes.
That is how prayer works.
"God doesn't do a THING ON EARTH WITHOUT a prayer."
Weird, but true. Think about it.

Few people ask others to pray 'for them' as you say, than the more devout will offer/tell people that they will pray for those they see are needy (of support). In mass, a priest will say to the church to 'pray for us'...for a list of circumstances, for example: for the soldiers overseas (answer: "Lord, hear our prayer").
Now, if you're mature enough to think -- and not be led by easy & fashionable/cynical notions... As a person grows (up) and reflects on humanity -- even as an intellect that challenges faith vs. science (if you wish) -- you see that people, meaning HUMANs need a belief system. That belief system will not only help individuals and groups cope with hardship and look forward (hope), but give an inner strength that is absolutely FAITH based. It matters little what you call a god or religion by name. The other point is, religions are most usually patterns of behavior that supports community -- and is against crime and acts that are harmful. Without religion -- teenagers are on their own. If you don't see the results of this today -- with a LACK of a foundation and the impulses reinforced by today's media and game-playing lifestyle (versus focus, work and responsibility).. then, you're floating along and not learning a thing, yourself.

Well i don't know about others, but when i have a personal problem, such as a big college final, or like seeing my father for the first time since i was four, i ask my friends to pray for me. It is not that we want pity, rather it is the fact that I would pray for my friends if they asked or needed it, and they would do the same for me. Alot of it is just what a family would do. Hence, the name brothers and sisters in Christ.

They think that the more people they have praying for them, the more likely it is God will do whatever it is that they are asking.
When in reality, most of the things people pray for would only require them to go out and do whatever is necessary to accomplish their request.
Instead they ask God. Some things they pray for are selfless - like asking God to heal people who are sick (though it's usually their friends and family), or when they pray for world peace (while simultaneously supporting people who are actively working against world peace).
If you think prayer works, and believe in God, then more power to you, but as for me, I'll stick to doing what I can, and leaving the rest up to whatever powers that be.

I'm not a christian, but when we pray, we send our thoughts out to the universe, like electromagnetic energy. The universe is in sync with all our thoughts as we are in sync with the universe (we have to be because we are of it). The more people that send a particular thought (prayer) pattern out to the universe, the stronger is the likelihood of the desired outcome occuring in our lives. ergo if people 'pray' for you, the possibility of a successfull outcome is multiplied.

Although a Christian, we still have man's temptations...plus, satan will throw whatever he can at us to make us stumble and fall away from God....so....the Bible says to pray for each other, to strengthen our own weakened spirits when faced with trials, etc.,......in fact....there are "prayer warriors" within the Gifted duties that pray for all as they are led to do so....could be a person in Iraq, or in Ireland, or right there in their home....the Spirit leads one to intercede and pray in Spirit and with voice and song, etc., till danger has passed....or till the person we are praying for has found his footing and able to manage on own...
Hard to explain really....but prayer is a weapon as well as a comfort and healer....so, prayer is VERY important to each individual and to the whole body of Christ's Believers....
God go with you :) (good question)

I am not "religious" per se... but my spiritual beliefs as well as that of most structured religions state that prayer offered up by many is more powerful (prayer being used as the accepted term for the direct focus of any intent... can be meditation, prayer, healing intent... whatever)
the more people who are focused on any particular desired outcome strengthens that outcome... so people ask for others to pray for them in order to strengthen that intent energy

This is what we are told to do.
Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.

Because prayer and unity are powerful. Also, if you are struggling with something, sharing it with someone else you can trust is usually a great (and scary) thing to do. We're supposed to be a body of Christians, not just on our own.
