If image is everything, why do people that don't know how to dress decently complain when they don't get any respect?

If the dogs are jumping' out the fence, why do you expect for the dogz not to jump at you?

If your clothes are so big they're swallowing you up, how do expect to get the same respect of that of a man dressed businesslike?

You don’t have to spend your life’s savings on an outfit that complements you.

Women, if too much cleavage, arm, leg, and back is showing, your dress can become distractive.
Men, if your under garments are reviled, or you have to hold your pants when you walk, this can also be a distraction.

Most of the time (not all the time), the way we dress is reflective of the music that we listen to, and the people we hang around.

People also dress to attract certain things and people. Yes, it is true that people dress to make statements, but the statement they present is not always (how should I say this…) expectable, better yet RESPECTABLE.

Image is Everything ( side note that is the name of my best friend's consultant group) and perception is human nature. We can all talk about what is RIGHT, but we need to deal with REALITY. You are 100% correct, peoples perception of you weighs more in the workplace than you can imagine. Either do not play the game and suffer the consequences or act right and live in the reality of it all.

I agree with the first answerer that everyone should be taken for who they are instead of being based on appearances. This is not a perfect world and it rarely happens. Recently I was in a hospital waiting room while my Mom was in surgery when this poorly dressed, unshaven man walks in and gets a cup of coffee. I thought to myself I hope no one runs him off because it was very cold outside. He walked over and sat beside a woman and began talking to her. It was a very small room and I could not help but overhear him. Turns out he was this woman's mother's doctor (GP) and had been up with her Mom until she went into surgery. I thought he was homeless! because I expect a doctor to dress a certain way.

What I am getting at is that judging people is wrong and can have bad effects come back on you.....and who knows the girl dressed so poorly may one day be your child's teacher. That's why What Not To Wear is so popular......
Peace.

I can't afford expensive clothes because goes to taking care of my kids. So if I'm not wearing designer clothes does that mean I deserve less respect than someone in Gucci? You sound like a very superficial person.

In a perfect world, appearance wouldn't matter. And while it shouldn't matter, the people who get ahead are savvy about dress, manners, and how they present themselves to others.

Etiquette has been around for generations. While I'd like to see less of stereotypes, I'd be very happy to see more of manners!

Wow! You took some heat but you are right. How we present ourself is very important. It is what we advertise about ourself. I work with people on seeing what it is they advertise and how to alter what they are saying if it is not true. The guys who dissed you are just as guilty as everyone else. I am sure they make judgments on appearance. Most of our sensory information is visual.

Don't be so mean. The person might be trying to make some kind of statement. Or they might not be able to afford "fashionable" clothes.

For the first two things you've stated in the description for your question, people NEED to get called out for them. For that LAST one, it's something called COMFORT. You don't want us men to wear clothes that are so tight that when we wear them, we look like homosexuals, DO YOU? Many guys may wear baggy jeans with them hanging half-off their @$$es, but I wear baggy jeans and I DON'T wear them like that!

One very simple reason I am a human being! it should not matter your station in life, your manner of dress how one is treated. Always treat others with respect and respect will be yours in return.
