Treating Poison Ivy Exposures
If you are exposed, according to the FDA, you should quickly (within 10 minutes):

* first, cleanse exposed areas with rubbing alcohol.
* next, wash the exposed areas with water only (no soap yet, since soap can move the urushiol, which is the oil from the poison ivy that triggers the rash, around your body and actually make the reaction worse).
* now, take a shower with soap and warm water.
* lastly, put gloves on and wipe everything you had with you, including shoes, tools, and your clothes, with rubbing alcohol and water.

Unfortunately, if you wait more than 10 minutes, the urushiol will likely stay on your skin and trigger the poison ivy rash. You may not be able to stop it on your skin, but you might still scrub your nails and wipe off your shoes, etc., so that you don't spread the urushiol to new areas.

Commercial products, like Zanfel, Ivy Cleanse Towelettes, and Tecnu Extreme Poison Ivy Scrub, are also available over-the-counter, if you don't want to use rubbing alcohol.

Poison ivy swelling can be brought down using several different methods and home remedies. Using heat and ice alternately may help to reduce swelling, and heat will eliminate a lot of the itchiness as well. Cortisone creams can help stimulate healthy new skin growth while healing the rash and reducing the swelling. Rubbing vinegar on the rash may stop the itching, dry out the skin, and bring down any swelling. Over the counter medicines for swelling, like Ibuprofen or Motrin, can really help keep any swelling down while easing the pain of the rash. If swelling becomes too severe make sure to get medical attention as soon as possible

This could worsen to the point where you have trouble breathing. If that happens, go to an emergency room, they can give you an injection of cortisone that will knock out the poison ivy in a few hours. It it really is head to toe, you must be in absolute misery. Go to the ER now. I did it when I had an all body reaction to poison ivy, and the staff didn't think it was weird at all.
I've found that the best medication for it is Diprolene. It's an ointment and is extremely effective, but it might not be over the counter yet.

Moisten a bar of Lava soap and apply to the infected area until it forms a thick film. Allow this to dry on the skin. The drying action of the soap draws the moisture out of the poison ivy and helps to dry it in. An added advantage is that the soap is rough enough to feel almost like scratching when you apply it. Also, taking an over the counter antihistamine will make the poison itch less.

Oh, sweetie, I feel for you! I baby-sat for a boy once who sat down in a patch of poison ivy naked in order to have some privacy to masturbate. He regretted it for weeks!!!

Make a paste of baking soda and cool water, and apply it wherever you can reach. Then hand it over to your honey to apply it where you can't reach. You may need to do it several times a day, so you may want to ask your honey to go buy a good supply of baking soda.

Put oatmeal in a cheese cloth bag and run it under a hot tap in the tub. It will sooth the itching and even help to heal the open sores. Soak in it and use the wet bag to cleanse your body. This is what I used on my kids when they had chicken pox.
