it is never too late to do treatment!!! it is suggested to treat while the infection is thought of as early, however, much has to do with genotype and how well your body will respond to the antiviral chemotherapy meds, ie, interferon and ribavirin.

i did 48 weeks of treatment and did just fine, however, i had many symptoms of hcv from the age of 8 up until treatment, so i actually felt better on treatment.

the main side effect for me was psychosis towards the end of treatment, but now days they treat differently-those who need a 48 week course are treated aggressivily the first 6 months and then they taper the medications as your weight allows.

i only had psychosis because i treated the infection with the same prescribed dose-and when i lost 30 pounds, it caused psychosis. now, you lose weight, they taper down on the meds so that wont happen.

get on a good antidepressant and anxiety medication a couple of months before treatment-this will allow your body to get ready-in case you have side effects (mentally). however, if your on the right meds, you will not even notice.

ask your doctor about a trial study-you will have to qualify and meet certain criteria, but more than likely you will be approved and the meds are paid for.

once on treatment, drinking as close to a gallon of water a day will greatly reduce any other side effects that you may have.

the treatment is not bad if you know what to expect and know what to do.

i took my shot at 5 pm every monday, pills twice a day. never skipped a dose, drank an efficient amount of water. my symptoms began going away in as little as three weeks. all went away but one-brain fog-in which i had many years prior to treatment.

good luck! get some support and dont worry! I was 34 when i began treatment-it's never too late!

The only way too tell how far it has progressed is with a liver biopsy. Im sure if you are being seen by a physician for it he has already ordered one? I found out I had it and have a pretty good idea of when I got it. It was about 20 years earlier. I went through treatment 3 times and the last time was a success. It was 4 years ago and my liver functions are still normal. The virus never goes away. You will always be a carrier, the goal is to keep it from replicating and keep it dormate for a lack of a better word... so it is not damaging your liver. Get a good doctor and good luck to you. It will be ok.

There is a treatment similar to chemotherapy given to cancer patients. It is not too late for this treatment unless you already have cirrhosis. Its a crap shoot whether or not it will work, but the odds are 50% or better. You just need to start with a visit to family doctor or medical clinic somewhere, and they will refer you to a specialist.

I was exposed to hepatitis-C 30 years ago through a blood transfusion. I have never had any symptoms. I monitor my liver enzymes, nearly eliminated alcohol intake, and avoid medications like Tylenol that damage the liver. I do not plan on seeking treatment unless something changes. I also quit worrying about it - I don't have any problems today and thats all that matters.

You are not alone. Lots of people have Hep C and even more used to have it but don't have it any more either naturally or through treatment.
