I've actually heard that there are not too many jobs in medical billing (as well as for the medical assistant). If you really want to try your hand at it, however, please look at programs offered thru your local county vo-tech school or community college as opposed to those 'online schools' such as penn foster or stratford career institute or private schools. At least you won't be out such a bundle of money if the general consensus is correct.

Go to a vocational college and take the course. You can be offered work at home positions if the company offers it. Medical billers are high in demand positions and are paid well. You usually make a % off what you bring in. It is very stressful because you are dealing with people who mostly don't pay their bills. Ask other medical billers their techniques for getting those over due bills paid.

Most do not, and some doctors do outsource to a billing company, but even those have offices.
