"Square yards" is a measure of Area, with one square yard being 3 ft x 3 ft, (36 inches x 36 inches) and "tons" is a unit of mass, (2000 lbs).

Two dimensional objects are massless, so there is no conversion from square yards to tons, however one exists from cubic yards to tons, if you provide the density.

1 yrd³ = 0.764554 m³
1 m³ water = 1,000kg = 1 metric ton.
1 yd³ = 0.765 metric tons.

1 cubic yard has a height of 36 inches.
1 inch height of water standing on 1 square yard..

= 0.765 ÷ 36 = 0.021 tons per square yard per inch.

This is for water. For any other substance;
0.021 x Density of the substance
= Tons per square yard per inch.

(Unless I'm totally wrong in my calculation, I can't figure where the 0.057 comes from).

**Do you have the correct answer Mr. thumbs down ???

Area in square yards times depth in inches times density in pounds per cubic inch times .648. The constant comes from 1296 in^2/yd^2 / 2000 lbs/ton. Your .057 number is correct for a material with a density of .088 lbs/in^3 or 152 lbs/ft^3 - crushed rock of some sort, I suspect.

The conversion is dependant on the material. A sq yd of mulch is lighter than a sq yd of sand. Can't compare weights of different sized things and can't compare sizes of different weight items in that respect.

That will depend on what it is. Yards is a measure of distance while tons is a measure of weight.
