I am having root canal done in a few weeks with a crown over the weakened tooth. It is the second tooth from the top that will be worked on. What should I expect? I was aways told that my tooth will end up falling out in a few years because of the root canal because it weakens the tooth.

other than the shots to numb the pain a root canal is nothing extreme...there is a lot of drilling tugging and pulling, which in the end will leave you sore for a few days...

no your tooth wont fall out...infact a root canal can enhance the life or longevity of a tooth that has gone bad anyways..

Well, first of all, you are dealing with the body's ability to heal things around the end of the tooth root and to keep it healed. Second, you have yourself taking care of a tooth which still can decay or break. I have a root canal and crown that has been on for almost 30 years with no problem but in my practice, I have seen others who have lost teeth after as little as 1-2 years [fortunately, none of which I initiated care on]. A lot depends on the skill of the practitioner but in any case it's worth the risk as the alternative is not as good by any means. You can expect to be numbed up and not feel anything. In fact, I've had patients actually go to sleep during this procedure. A rubber dam [sort of like a little rubber raincoat] will be placed over the tooth to keep the REALLY small instruments out of your throat and to help the dentist to sterilize the inside of the tooth. The procedure will take 1 or 2 appointments and between them you will have a temporary filling in the hole they make into your tooth. I wouldn't recommend getting the crown until you're sure the tooth has calmed down and the root canal is working though. Just be careful of it so you don't fracture the weak tooth. Good luck!

I don't know who you talked to. Good Lord, did my root canal hurt! Maybe I went to the wrong guy, but my parents have also had root canals and theirs really hurt, too. My jaw was so sore from that dentist drilling and shoving those poky needle-things (looked kinda like fishhooks) in my roots...I could barely open my jaw for a week. Not to freak you out or whatever...but I think somebody's pulling your leg. The root canal doesn't really hurt while you're anesthetized, no. You'll be numb and it'll feel weird, like, a lot of pressure and drooling and all, but it won't hurt. It'll hurt afterwards, though. Get an ice pack, get good meds, and prepare for some serious soreness after the numbness wears off. The injection is the least of your problems. But really, at least you won't have the surprise of all the pain to scare you if you know about it ahead of time. You'll be a little better prepared if you know the pain's coming. Go get the root canal and join the rest of us.

I had a root canal done last fall by my dentist - he just gave me 2 jabs like you have for fillings and then drilled out all the gunck and backed the tooth with an antibacterial filling that tasted of cloves - no pain at all on this.

A week later he did the same but instead of the antibac filling he put the root canal filler in the tooth - no pain here either but he did advise I took ibuprofen before the jabs wore off just incase.

Just relax and let your dentist do what he train to do, if you can get through a filling you will get through the root canal.

I have one root canal and have had no problems with it. Your tooth is pretty much dead, which is why you need the procedure... so there isn't any live nerve to cause pain. It will be uncomfortable... and you may be sore for a day or two. But there isn't any agonizing pain like you might expect.

I've never heard from anyone that my tooth might fall out because of the root canal.

As long as you get numbed up good, you will not feel a thing. I am very scared of dentists so I would not lie to you!. Just don't make the same mistake I made an please get the crown!! I had to have my tooth pulled because it cracked! (I have had 4 roots canals in 4 years because I was not eating and it destroyed my teeth so I know it is not that bad/painful)

I had mine done on the top big tooth. They numb you up and you shouldn't feel a thing. I didn't have any pain. I just felt a little tired from having my mouth open for so long but no biggie. Just close your eyes and relax. To me, just felt like a longer filling. The crown should strengthen your teeth better than if the teeth was left with the cavity and left to rot. I've had my crown in for about 7 years and still as good as day one. Just use care when chewing hard foods and it should last a good while. Good luck!

No, you will be numbed and not feel it then. It will be sore afterwards when the anesthetic wears off, but it's nothing horrible.

And your tooth will not necessarily fall out afterwards. I had a root canal done about 25 years ago, and I still have the tooth.

The only time it hurt for me was when they kill the nerve. It is annoying when they scrape all the crap out of your tooth but that doesn't hurt. I don't know about top teeth.
