My daughter is 22 months old with a 101.9 temp and still going up. I have given her motrin at home and called the Dr office. She has no other symptoms besides the fever. I spoke with the nurse at my peditricians office and she told me that since there are no other symptoms that I should just treat her fever at home. She said that there is no need to see her. The problem I have with that is the fact that when she has a sore throat or ear infection her fever doesn't respond to over the counter meds and we end up in the ER with a fever of 103 or higher. There are several walkin clinics in town that I am able to take her to. My question is.....If she was your daughter what would you do?

If her fever doesn't respond to the Motrin, you could always give acetaminophen (Tylenol) on top of that. The active ingredients aren't the same, so it's safe to use both of them. I would wait a couple of hours after giving the motrin though. A temp. of 102 or 103 is not unsafe for her, unless she has a history of febrile seizures. Fever does not indicate how sick your child is, only that she is fighting an infection. If her fever lasts for more than a day or two or gets very high (over 104) then I would insist she be seen.

Since there aren't any other symptoms and the fever hasn't reached 103, you should be fine treating the fever at home. What my doctor suggested to do with my son when he has a fever is give him motrin first then about 4 hours later give him tylenol and just rotate the two until the fever breaks.

If she's happy and playing and drinking plenty of fluids, I'd wait it out. Motrin will not return a fever to normal, just drop it a degree or two at the most. You can let a fever go up to 5 full days with no other visible symptoms. If she starts acting like she's in pain or tells you she's in pain (I don't know how verbal she is, but every mom knows her child.), refuses to drink, (not to worry if she's not interested in food, but be adamant about fluids in any way shape or form!) or the fever doesn't respond to the proper dose of motrin, then it's worth having her seen.

If you feel your child needs to be seen, then you should take her in. If your pediatrician doesn't listen to your concerns, then you need to change drs. For the time being, try putting her in a bath to bring down her temp. You can alternate Tylenol with Motrin - if you give Motrin at 9am, you can give Tylenol at noon, Motrin again at 3pm, Tyelonol again and so on. If her fever still does not respond and your pediatrician won't see you, take her to urgent care. A mother's instinct is a powerful thing. If you feel something is wrong, then it is probably true.

We have gone through the same exact thing before. If the fever persists for a few days, it means she has an infection somewhere, most probably in the ears. Have the ears checked out by the doctor. She might have to go on antibiotics so the infection does not get worse.
I wish your daughter good health :)

The temp is still low enough to wait. You can give motrin every 6-8 hours, as well as tylenol every 4-6 hours. They two drugs are absorbed by the body differently and can be taken at the same times AS LONG AS THERE ARE NO OTHER SYMPTOMS. She could be getting teeth at this age.

If you are not comfortable waiting and can afford to take her to the clinic, take her. She is your child, you know her better than any doctor.

If she was my kid, and her fever didn't drop or break at all within an hour of the Motrin, I'd probably give her a little more, and if that didn't work, I'd probably call the doc back and tell them that the fever is not responding. If they gave me any problems, I'd go to urgent care. Unresponsive fevers make me nervous.

From my experience whatever your instinct is telling you is what you should go with its much better to be seen and told its nothing than to wait and it end up being something treatable.. I am very nervous about fevers, most tend to be a one nighter and no problem but once it went from a low 101 and spiked to 105 and threw my son into seizures so i learned to not take fevers to lightly, so if it were my daughter and i was worried enough to post about it then see the doctor.. ease your mind =)

Go with your gut. If you think she needs to be seen, take her in. I have a 16 month old son....And every time he gets a fever, I freak. My wife is the calm one. A mothers instinct is a good one. If you are taking her in call that nurse and tell her point blank that you want an appointment asap and you will not be taking no for an answer. God bless you and I hope your little one is ok.

I would wait it out. Everytime my neice gets sick thats all we can really do. Try cooling her down w/ cool wash rags and give her baby tylonal. That should help some. Also Dont try to make her sweat it out children sickness dont work the same way we do. Keep a light onsie or something on her. Keep checking on her and if it goes over 103 take her then. Usually when we take brook they get mad we brought her in and give us meds to help her sleep and to calm her her fever. But I'd try everything else before. Good luck hope shes alright
