I did a clean install on an older computer with windows 98 se and then an xp upgrade. I ran all the updates and installed ie7. I noticed xp upgrade took a long while in spots, but didn't think about the cpu so I didn't check it then. When I really noticed it was when I was installing one care but turns out it wasn't the problem. What I do know is I do not have a virus, as I just did this clean install. The usage jumps around from iexplore (especially when I first open the browser) to other processes. I even used microsofts troubleshooter with msconfig and its still doing it. Anybody have any ideas?

Try restarting your computer. If that doesnt fix it...sometimes I have noticed that an older PC that had Windows 98, upgrading to Windows XP had that problem a lot. It made the computer work really hard to run it.. It could be your FBS since its an older computer. What you can do is contact either Microsoft to see if they have solutions, or contact the company who made your computer, to see if they have any soultions, or find a computer technician from your town to look at it.

Thats all I got, hope it helps!

It is perfectly normal that cpu usage runs high, especially when opening. at which time most programs are cpu intensive. Especially browsers, like Internet Explorer. IE is embedded in Windows and used in all kinds of ways, not just for browsing.

If it goes high (even to 100%) when opening programs and whatnot, that is normal (especially on an older CPU). If it stays at 100% for a long time even after the program is loaded and you are not doing anything, then check Task Manager to see which program is causing it to do that.

If it does not stay at 100% for a long time, that is fine.
