For 2000 years Christians persecuted and killed atheists, only in recent history has Atheism been a safe philosophy to have.

Now many Atheist scholars are recommending that Atheists actively engage and attack organized religion, especially Christianity, is this a good idea?

By attack I mean on philosophical and scholarly grounds not as in physical attack. Only so called "peace loving" Christians would even think in those terms.

Yes it is a good idea. For thousands of years our kind has been murdered, tortured, maimed, etc by Christianity. Now is the time to fight back and push them around. Christianity is afraid of atheism, since they know that we are right and it would negatively affect their business. Christianity knows that their religion is based on stealing stories/fables from other ancient religions and making other stuff up.
Atheists need to stand up and fight against their philosophies and push them around. Give them a taste of their own medicine. Ever wonder why when Christianity was taking over Europe on a mass scale that it was called the "Dark Ages" and when Atheism started to take a hold it was called the "Age of Enlightenment"?

You (like many here) make atheism sound like an alternative religion.
It is not.
If it were, then it might make some kind of twisted sense to go kill the infidels for believing in a false doctrine. It is a kind of christer logic that has been starting wars for the last two, three millennia.
However, since atheism is not a credo or religion, merely a denial of one superstition, those who regard themselves as "atheists" should not "fight against" an organized religion.
Personally, I pity the poor gullibles who spend enormous effort to support their priest/preacher/imam in a style that they themselves can only wistfully imagine.
There is an old saying about "pie in the sky" that is most apt. But I prefer my pie after dinner, not post mortem, thank you very much.

I am not an atheist, but I am not a christian either. I feel the only time we should fight against christian philosophy is when christians are attcaking those with other beliefs and trying to take away others rights and liberties. I think many christians do this alot on subtle and overt levels. I think it is up to nonbelievers and believers of different faiths to stand up and to attacking christians in the appropriate manner. So if christians result to killing (like in our current war) we need to fight back with killing them. If christians are trying to take away rights of other human beings because of their beliefs, we have to fight against that. I think it is very sad that so many christians have brought about disdain form others by being so hipocritical and not really following the teachings of christ.

"Expeditions against the heathen?"

Actually, I've given this some serious thought. After all, we aren't all "Christian" today just because it was a good idea. Christianity, like all religions, was imposed by the sword and maintained by the stake.

The only way to "change the minds" of the vast majority of ignorant peasants is through violence and bloodshed. History has certainly proved that much.

I'm really not advocating for violence - but it's a fact nonetheless that you don't convert the masses by sitting down with them and explaining why they're wrong. You just don't!

Rather follow the Christian model and slaughter enough of the peasants to instill a healthy fear in the rest, so that they submit to the New Philosophy thereby imposed upon them. Then periodically burn dissenters to make an example of them. From a purely pragmatic POV, that's how it's done; and again, we have this lesson from the followers of Jesus.

But I don't REALLY propose we do this! I agree that it would only demote us to the sewer level of "Christians" morally and ethically.

Allow me to correct you.......Atheism is a philosophy.....Christianity is a way of life. How can atheists successfully attack the Truth in the Word of God when they don't have a solid foundation to back up their erroneous beliefs?!.......They can't! Atheists will only contend to be fools without tools when confronting the thoroughly equipped Christians who have the mind of Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit. Is it a good idea?.......

I think we all have a duty to challenge people's belief systems where those belief systems impact on our lives in a negative way - for instance, where religious objections to contraception are contributing to the spread of HIV etc.
Whether as athiests we should attack Christian philosopy in general is less clear - for some people their belief system gives them comfort and is it really out place to convince them they are wrong, even if we know they are.
I'd say live and let live - fight certainty, religious or political, where it causes damage but allow people freedom of thought and belief elsewhere.
Having said that - Christians are a bit nutty in general, aren't they.

They already have been, in the education systems. In television programming.
Secular humanism is promoted.
And it's also not true that for 2000 years Christians pers. and att. atheists.
In some places at certain times, yes. These people were misguided.

Every religion makes their own religion out to be like it's the greatest thing in the world and their religion is how the world should be run. There are so many out there. It's like politics. Every religion is ALWAYS fighting with another religion. There is so much garbage out there. So much it's like who cares anymore.
I chose to go non-denominational. There's a God and that's it. No rules, no expectations, just count your blessings and be happy. =)

It seems to me that the Christians were the ones being persecuted for the last 2000 years. I've not heard of them killing atheists. Of course, killing anyone is not a good idea. Why can't you just be content to believe what you want to believe without attacking others for not believing what you do? I'll pray for you.

If by actively engage and attack religion, you mean discuss openly the errors and inconsistencies, I say sure. I mean that is what we're doing right here in this section on Y!A.

But that's the only "attacking" that I would support. And even then, I have no problem with people believing as they wish as long as they keep their religion out of our schools, laws and government.
