I weigh 135 pounds. I am 5'1, 26% fat on my body, and I want to lose 15 by summer which sounds like a reasonable amount of weight. for my height I should be 120, but I am having trouble figuring out how many calories i should be consuming a day to achieve the best results. I know that 1200 is too little, how much more should I consume. Once I figure out how many calories I am going to stick to a 40% protein, 30% carbs, 20% fat diet.

400 calories for breakfast
100 calorie snack
400 calories for lunch
100 calorie snack
400 calories for dinner

total: 1400 calories

granted you can spend those calories on whatever foods you want. Keep in mind healthy food will leave you less hungry because you can eat more of it for the same calories as something that is more processed or fatty.
Also I wouldn't go over that caloric intake since you are only 5'1" if you want to lose weight.
plus don't forget to exercise, even if it's just a little bit. it'll keep you motivated and give you energy.

The answer is: less than you're eating NOW.

Just do four things and you can lose the weight.

1. Drink only 4 oz. of water or other liquids with meals, whatever you want in between.
2. Walk 2000 steps every day that you don't do now--normal walking pace is find. You will lose 5--7 pounds a year doing that even if you make no other changes.
3. Do not eat after 8:00 at night, and cut down on sugars while increasing the amount of greens. After 8, drink water.

In case you cheat, pay back the extra calories the next day. if you can't do that--your problem isn't eating, it's compulsive reaching for food as an addictive substance every time you feel a negative emotion.

You also need to stop drinking any milk except non fat, as I had to. And you can do a few exercises and stretches before you walk; muscles burn up calories more efficiently than fat does, so a few more muscles from push-ups, sit-ups and Canadian Air Force and aerobic exercise will help.

Weigh yourself on Sunday morning only, in the a.m., and don't worry about anything except finding the right calorie amount for you and taking charge of your diet.

If you want something, and you shouldn't have it, don't say "no", just say "yes".
Acknowledge the temptation. Name it, admit it, five times--then go away, do something else; and come back in ten minutes You'll find the craving is a shadow of what it was--it wasn't real, just an urge that you can now master when it comes back, and it will come back. Acknowledge it again and say, "but I have something more important to do."

Good luck.

If you don't work out much, I think 1200 is the right amount to restrict yourself to, if you want to lose weight. If you are working out a lot, then you'll probably need a little more- maybe 1300-1400. But, be careful. If you restrict too much (1000 or less) then you're body will slow its metabolism down in order to preserve itself.

actually 1200 to 1400 calories would be just about right if you want to lose the weight by summer.
