I don't know. I'm only 73% atheist so I will mess up your count.
I live slap bang in the middle of the bible belt and most of what I see are lapsed christians who still nominally claim a faith, and Sunday christians who basically go for the social aspect. Look around you at the number of houses and compare against the capacity of the churches. 80% is impossible.
I would consider the lapsed christians to be closer to agnosticism than christianity and I think the accepted definitions support this. The bible says 'if you are neither hot nor cold you will be spat out' (or something like that)? I'd say that probably makes for around 5% christian and perhaps 70% agnostic.

It is difficult to quantify the number of atheists in the world. Different people interpret "atheist" and related terms differently, and it can be hard to draw boundaries between atheism, non-religious beliefs, and non-theistic religious and spiritual beliefs. Furthermore, atheists may not report themselves as such, to prevent suffering from social stigma, discrimination, and persecution in certain regions. Despite these problems, most studies indicate that the non-religious make up about 12-15% of the world's population.

Hmmm, I know there's a high percentage in the US that claim Christianity, simply b/c they're not really aware of other religions-they're probably agnostic. World-wide, it's very different. Christianity is the minority. True 'god-haters' are actually very few. Many don't believe in it's existence (such as myself). Their are scientist-followers ((the ones who will only admit to what can be scientifically shown), Buddhists, Wiccans, pagans, Hinduists, agnostics, etc. To hate God, you have to believe in it first.

Most estimates range 5-8% atheist, with 10% as an outside figure.
Depending on how you define staunch, the statistic for Christian will vary.

Depends who you ask.
I see people on here have said "13% nonreligious." I usually hear it's 4% "atheist," but of course that only refers to people who have embraced that term in spite of the social prejudice against it.
"Christians," meanwhile, are usually said to represent about 80-85%.
But I'd argue that these numbers are misleading. Most people call themselves "Christian" in this culture, sure; but of those, only the fringe is really fanatical. The rest are more or less atheist in practice, even if they go to church every week as a routine.
In other words, society is much more progressive than it appears from the numbers - and we can ALL thank God for that!

Atheists..? More importantly, how many poeple in the US are scientifically literate..??
They are the ones who will have the tools to fix the current global mess. Refusing to see the evidence and data as many christians or other fundies would, is a very stupid and ignorant platform to stand on, and they are culpable by choosing to be part of the problem, and not part of the solution..!!

I would guess around 10% of the US is atheist/agnostic.
Probably around 40% are staunch Christians.
About 25% are Christians to a lesser degree.
The other 25% are various other religions.
Just my theory...

Latest number from what I have seen shows a total of around 24%. 10% atheist, 10% agnostic and 4% Buddhist. Of 'Christians' polled almost 80% admitted to going to church 'rarely or never'.

Who is percentagewise?
[Nope, wrong again, Percentagewise. It should be "percentage-wise". Clearly wording polls is essential for assuring statistical accuracy. I thought you'd know that by now.]
