I am a Christian, considering going to a local psychic for a reading. I am pretty sure it is against my faith to learn what the future *may* hold (you know, it's all relative), but I'm wondering if someone can tell me why, or provide me with a Bible passage that talks about fortelling the future.

I would also appreciate it if you stopped rating people negatively for providing Bible passages as I had asked for them.

And, I am strong in my faith. The reason I asked is because I am not certain of the answer... that's what this site is for!

I'm also a christian and I strongly believe that going to Psychics, fortunetellers etc is wrong, for such practices has long been associated with witchcraft or paganism. And by the way I used to be a witch and I changed for the better.

here are some bible passages that proves fortunetelling and witchcraft is against the will of God

"Don't sacrifice your son or daughter. And don't try to use any kind of magic or witchcraft to tell fortunes, or to cast spells or talk with spirits of the dead. The Lord is disgusted w/anyone who does these things, and that's why he will help you destroy the nations that are in the land. Never be guilty of doing any of these things!"
DEUTORONOMY 18:10-13

"God will bless all who have washed their robes. They will each have the right to eat fruit from the tree that gives life, and they can enter the gates of the city. But outside the city will be the dogs, witches, immoral people, murderers, idol worshipers, and everyone who loves to tell lies and do wrong"
REVELATION 22:14-15

Hope this helps.

Psychics have such a dismal track record that it's not worth considering whether it clashes with your religion. The fact is that you're not going to learn a thing about the future because psychics can't fortell the future any more than you can. Try it and see if I'm wrong.

I don't know about your religion, but there are other reasons to avoid this. For one thing, it doesn't work. No one knows what the future really holds. You can make an estimated guess, but the only way to really find out is to live long enough to see what happens in the future. Another reason is that often these people are scam artists, and will tell you things like "there is a curse on you, but for $5,000 I can make sure it goes away", only to have them keep "finding curses" until you are cursed with any empty bank account. Don't do it - it isn't worth it.

There's also this: if someone truly were a psychic, chances are they wouldn't tell too many people about it, and wouldn't charge anything for what they do. It might be appropriate to give them a gift, but they would never ask for money as their "karma" (as it were) would probably cause them to lose their abilities. I'm a skeptic, but things have happened that make me doubt my own doubts. I know that sounds contradictory, but I can't rule out what I can't disprove.

As to those who say it is the work of "Satan", I would bet they are clueless as to the origin of the name. Do not fear what you do not understand - learn the truth and the truth will set you free - even from superstitious myths that you didn't know were myths.

I find it strange that people who say they are "Christians", and say they believe in Jesus and GOD, then refuse to accept that their Jesus or GOD can be able to contact or communicate with them. We are all psychic, we all have spiritual information given to us in all ways - the words of a stranger, the magazine article, the movie, "thoughts" that we are given, and yes, voices. The churches have included this in the bible so long ago, (that this is "black magic, sorcery and evil") to ensure that people can not (are now afraid to) have personal contact with their GOD or other spirit guides, angels etc. If we did, that would mean we did not need the church. Christians talk about a personal GOD (which it is) but then deny the existence of any part of GOD. We are all one, there is no separation between GOD and us. There is only one truth - that is the one within you, everything else is just something that someone else has told you. LOVE, Peace and Light to all, peacefromken.

Lev 20:6 ¶ And the soul that turneth after such as have familiar spirits, and after wizards, to go a whoring after them, I will even set my face against that soul, and will cut him off from among his people.

Deu 18:10 There shall not be found among you [any one] that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, [or] that useth divination, [or] an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch,
Deu 18:11 Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.
Deu 18:12 For all that do these things [are] an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee.

The seers will be ashamed
and the diviners disgraced.
They will all cover their faces
because there is no answer from God."

Micah 3:7

" 'A man or woman who is a medium or spiritist among you must be put to death. You are to stone them; their blood will be on their own heads.' "

Leviticus 20:27

Just a few but there are warnings all over the Bible about false prophets, sorcery, divination, etc.

Actually Chriscross is right for once (inintentionally).
We do receive warnings to abstain from witchcraft and sorcery in the Bible. This is a form of it. You need to stick with the guidance from the Holy Ghost. You don't always get an answer immediately, but you will.

Yeah, first of all, if your instinct as a Christian is telling you to avoid this, I'd follow that instinct...

Deuteronomy 18:10-12 states: 10 Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in [a] the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, 11 or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. 12 Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD, and because of these detestable practices the LORD your God will drive out those nations before you.

Stay clear as this is not something of God. Read Revelations 21, Deuteronomy 18 Leviticus 19. God Bless

Sorcery and witchcraft were banned under the Mosaic Law because it's a form of idolatry. While Christians are not under the Mosaic Law, we are commanded to love God before everything -- and everyone -- else. Why would a Christian who loves God consult a psychic who uses ungodly powers to "see" your future?
