it will weaken the cartilage over time and your ear will look like it is slightly lower then normal...I have my left ear done twice on the top part and have noticed that over the last 15 yrs it seems to droop a little, but it doesn't do any harm.

It doesn't harm you at all, but it is best to get it done by a professional, and you shouldn't get it done with a gun.
It take a while to heal, but it will heal a lot quicker and more efficiently if it is pierced without a gun. I believe they call it harpooning them, but you'll have to go to a local piercer.
I had mine done at the mall with a gun two years ago, and it took about three months to heal completely.
You can really get it done either way, just make sure you clean it properly.
Also, it's best to get it done on the side you don't sleep on, just to make the healing process more comfortable.

Word of advise on cartilage piercings. Do NOT, repeat do NOT
have cartilage pierced with a gun! Please go to a professional piercer and let them do it for you. The gun can cause serious problems with these piercings.

It's not going to harm you or do permanent damage to your body. But it is pretty painful and a bit slow to heal.
